The Real Estate Department hires student workers and teaching assistants for both Undergraduate and MBA courses as needed by the faculty. The following information addresses questions you may have regarding how to properly apply for a position, instructions on submitting payroll forms/documentation to the department, and carrying out academic/research related tasks.


How to apply for a position: If you are interested in being hired as a student worker or teaching assistant, please follow these required steps:

 

  • Contact the prospective professor for whom you would work.

 

  • Once the professor has agreed to hire you as a teaching assistant or student worker, submit the signed written agreement outlining your arrangement along with the appropriate payroll forms to the following persons:

     

    • For student workers: Sarah Hasiuk, Real Estate Department Business Administrator at shasiuk@wharton.upenn.edu or 215-898-0929. Her office is located at 1472 Steinberg-Dietrich Hall.

    • For teaching assistants: Yezta Johnson,  Assistant to the Chair, Real Estate Dept, yezta@wharton.upenn.edu or 215-898-0930. Her office is located at 1468 Steinberg-Dietrich Hall.

     

  • Please review the list below, and click on only the forms that are relevant to your position. Note: You are required to submit payroll forms in person BEFORE YOU START YOUR EMPLOYMENT with the department. Contact the Business Administrator or the Assistant to the Chair as indicated above to schedule an appointment.

  • Please note: If you have worked previously at the University of Penn and are still in the payroll system, you do not need to complete the W-4 form or the electronic online I-9 form.

International Students must complete the FNIF and submit  a copy of their visa, passport, I-94 Card, Form I-20 and Social Security Card.

 

**Note: All Teaching Assistants must agree to abide by the Consensual Relations/Sexual Harassment policy.

  1. Weekly Time Sheets are due in the Real Estate Department (1400 Steinberg-Dietrich Hall) in the mailbox of Yezta Johnson every Thursday by 3:00 pm. They will be accepted through 12 noon on Fridays, but Thursdays are preferred. Click to download time sheets.

  2. Weekly Paychecks may be picked up at the receptionist's desk in the Real Estate Department every Friday after 12:00 PM.

  3. Monthly Payroll (graduate students only): Graduate students who are teaching assistants receive a monthly stipend. Monthly paychecks may be picked up at the receptionist's desk on the the last day of the month. Note: If the last day of the month falls on a weekend, then paychecks can be picked up on Friday.

  4. Academic Related Information
    The Real Estate Department Administrator, Yezta Johnson, assists faculty with class scheduling, oversees and coordinates department events, and addresses student registration issues. Contact yezta@wharton.upenn.edu or call 898-0930 with questions that you may have regarding handling academic tasks for professors. If she cannot be reached, please contact Elizabeth Spence at: spencee@wharton.upenn.edu or call 215-746-3165.

  • TA Office Hours: Once teaching assistant office hours have been established, please submit a formal email outlining the arrangement.

  • TA Office Space: Contact Elizabeth Spence spencee@wharton.upenn.edu for more information.

  • Department Hours of Operation: The department is open from 9-5:00 pm Monday through Friday. Please plan accordingly if you need to contact a professor or administrator to use the fax or copier machines.

  • Online Roster Access: If a professor would like you to have access to class lists, please notify Yezta Johnson for authorization.

  • Copier use: See the instructor for a copier code. Click on instructions for user guide.

  • Exam distribution policy

  • Guest lecturers/Special Events: See Elizabeth Spence.

  • Reprographics: See the staff for carrying out this task, as dedicating funds for copying purposes must be authorized before requisitions are submitted to Reprographics.

  • Supply Ordering: If a professor needs supplies contact the staff for assistance with the request. If an item is not in stock then email the purchase request (with professor approval), listing the item needed and vendor information.
